COMPETITION RULES

JUDGING: Voice Feedback will be given from each judge and will be EMAILED LIVE during the show while the performance is still fresh to the email address provided on your registration form. We go to great lengths to hire mature, professional, and caring judges who will provide you with positive, helpful critiques of your performances. Each routine will be judged upon their performance in the following areas and scored out of 10 points in each category:

  • DESIGN: the design of the routine - choreography, costuming, props etc.
  • EXECUTION: the dance itself and how well it is executed
  • PERFORMANCE: the dancers - their passion, emotion and the power of the routine

MUSIC: Participants may select the music of their choice, not exceeding 3 minutes.  PLEASE NOTE that Utah Dance Fest is a family friendly event - if music is vulgar, profane or inappropriate for all audiences, deductions may be given.

Music must be uploaded to our website in one of the following formats:  mp3, mp4, wav or m4a.  We will not accept music until show orders are posted so that SHOW# can be included with submissions.  Watch for an email from us asking for music.

Please indicate accurate song lengths on registration forms so we can run an organized and on-time show.   At the event, please have a representative at or very near the sound table during every routine in case back up is needed.

COSTUMES/PROPS: Costumes should be designed to fit the style of the dance and be family appropriate. Props must be carried on/off the floor by dancer(s) and time limit includes carrying them on & off.

AWARDS: Every soloist will place as Queen/King or 2nd, 3rd place etc, and duo/trios will place 1st, 2nd, etc. Queens/Kings will receive a tiara/crown. Every dancer will receive their own UDF figurine trophy. Overall awards will also be presented.

STAGE AND PRACTICE TIME: The Logan High Auditorium is one of the largest stages in the state. It’s dimensions are 72′ wide x 32-44′ deep with an arched front. Please practice accordingly. There will be no practice time on the stage the day of the competition.

PLEASE NOTE

ABILITY LEVELS: Some competitions distinguish ability levels based upon number of hours of dance per week or upon skills or tricks performed. At Utah Dance Fest we believe that ability level is not so objectively defined. It’s not what skills you perform, but how you perform them that determines your ability level. Likewise, the number of hours danced per week does not necessarily equate to the dancers ability on the dance floor. If you are unsure of your placement please seek the advice of your director or choreographer.

CREATING CATEGORIES: Our Solo/Duo/Trio categories will typically have between 3-8 entries per category based first on ability and then on age. We will only combine ages if someone is alone in their category - we believe everyone deserves to have someone to compete with. Large categories may be split based on style of dance but that would be our last consideration - our judges are very qualified to judge various styles together in a category. Overall awards will be given in each ability level for solos and an overall duo/trio will be awarded. At Utah Dance Fest we take the time to create the categories ourselves - not with a computer program - in hopes of adding a human element in our desire to create a meaningful competition experience for everyone. Please be understanding of our efforts to do that and know that although we make every effort possible to be fair to everyone, we can't please everyone.  All decisions by UDF Directors are final.

SUBMITTING MULTIPLE ENTRIES: Dancers are free to enter as many categories as they wish, and we will do our best to get them in different categories, but often they will have to compete one of their routines in an older category.  If more than one entry has to be in the same category, an adjudicated award will be given for each additional performance. A figurine will be presented for each entry.

WINNERS MUST ADVANCE: After taking 1st place in any ability division at any comparable competition, you must enter the next level higher. Dancers who violate this rule may be disqualified at the discretion of the UDF director.

ABILITY LEVEL DEDUCTIONS: Dancers who are decided by the judges to be entered in TOO LOW ABILITY LEVEL may receive up to a 5 point deduction per judge! Please be fair and honest in your placement.

FAMILY FRIENDLY DEDUCTIONS: Utah Dance Fest is a family friendly event. Deductions will be taken if costumes, music or choreography are deemed inappropriate for a family audience.
